Scout Summer Camp 2023 – Great Tower

Our Scouts had an amazing summer camp this year at Great Tower Scout Adventure Centre, close to Lake Windermere in Cumbria.

Twenty-seven Scouts and five Leaders braved the weather and the traffic on the long journey to the centre, arriving at the beautiful site to light rain. Kit unloaded and everything unpacked, a BBQ dinner and the fun began straight away with an activity to get them exploring the site and learning about their surroundings.

After an early start on Sunday, too early for the Leaders, the fun really began as the packed activity programme kicked off. Over the course of the next six days Scouts would get to do lots of different activities including stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, raft building, crag climbing, archery, backwoods cooking, a fell walk to the top of Gummers How and much more.

Every Scout got to try something they had never done before, and many overcame their fears to give things a go. They pushed themselves to achieve things they never thought they could or would ever do and the sense of achievement was massive.

The evenings saw Scouts taking part in some activities such as orienteering, circus skills, a campfire or simply being allowed some free time to explore the site with their friends and make new friends from the other groups on the site.

Friday saw Scouts exploring the area beyond the site with a short drive into Bowness-on-Windermere. From there, they took a lake cruise down to Lakeside, a steam train ride to Haverthwaite and back and then visited the Lakeside Aquarium. There was then the return lake cruise to look forward to and some free time in Bowness to explore the town and a last night treat of pizza for dinner before the long drive home the following day.

Scouts had a brilliant time, loved all the activities and are already talking about what they want to do next year!
